As a high school government teacher I often look for many different ways to get students to think about their political beliefs and encourage them to be active citizens. So this summer I decided that I was going to purchase clothing from both the Obama and Romney campaigns to wear these next few months. It was extremely easy to get clothing from Obama's site and I had many choices, from many designers. (Note: this clearly says something about the demographic they are trying to get to donate and the public figures that support the campaign). I went with some yoga pants and a sweatshirt. Then I went to Mitt Romney's site to purchase clothing. After searching for a good 15 minutes I realized there was NOT A SINGLE piece of clothing for women on his site. There were various choices for men and even babies but no apparel for women!?!
This was incredibly disappointing to me as a voter and as a woman. It also perpetuates a negative stereotype of the views of the Republican party on women. After shaking my head and looking for another 10 minutes to make sure I hadn't missed anything I got a little hot under the collar. How can the Republican party correct misconceptions that they are perpetuating. Women have been part of the electorate since 1920 and it should be obvious for all political parties to cater to them as well as any other part of the electorate (race, profession, etc.).
Go ahead and check out the sites using my links below and see for yourself. I would love to hear your thoughts on this!!!
